First, Hello Cupcake's bacon cupcake was paired with maple and pecan, so formally it was a Maple Bacon Pecan cupcake and further described as "moist maple cake made with pure, real maple syrup topped with browned butter frosting, candied pecans and bacon."
Second, wording problemo: "moist" - my cake was not very moist as the description inferred, in fact my cupcake was a bit crusty the clown on the outside, which I think suited the cupcake better since you can pretend it was wafflely (that's totally a word...Imma going to try it on my next opp on Words with Friends...watch out for that Sean...WAFFLELY...right in the dangeah zonage) or even french toasty - something needed to be crispy in the cupcake...since the bacon was not crispy (refer my fif point below).
Turd, toppings problemo: "canded pecans and bacon". HEY! I thought this was the bacon show, not the pecan and bacon show! While I do enjoy my candied pecans, the mixture sorta felt like filler.
Fourth, missing in action problemo: while I think maple syrup pairs well with bacon and the brown butter frosting was quite tasty, I feel like the bb frosting should have been choco. I mean choco bacon is yerms!
Fif, type of bacon problemo: The texture was really odd, and not yo momma's breakfast bacon (or shall I say my dad since my mom would never fry us up some bacon...EVAR) It was neither hearty or crunchy, it was just loose and stringy and had a weird bacon dust and film on it. I want to say that the bacon used was one from a jar...you know like the ones that you could buy on the salad aisle. And no not uber red Bacos, but like the more "natty" bacon in a jar. EEP! I get it, bacon is a pain in the culo to fry up and crumble in the ktichen, BUT if you are gonna do a bacon cupcake justice you have to fry some oinky for reals!
Overall a bit of disappointment. I'm super bummed. But the light at the end of the tunnel was that I can now say, I Kissed Bacon Cupcake and I didn't like it.
So after trying to contact my Groupon vendor Bonafide Cupcakes on multiple occasions for some cupcakes (if you cannot tell I lurves cupcakes), I have decided to wave my cupcake white flag and ask for a refund from Groupon. I purchased my Groupons (2 dozen) in April and was hoping to use it rather quickly or even now, but to no success. I have been calling Bonafide Cupcakes on their phone number for the past 2 weeks straight and nobody picks up the phone. WTF!
So awhile back in the end of May, Groupon sent me this:
"Thank you for purchasing the BonaFide Cupcakes Groupon! Due to the great response, BonaFide Cupcakes will be remodeling their kitchen between May 24th and June 7th to accommodate the large number of incoming orders and will not be able to take new orders during this time. They will be able to take orders again after this time up until the expiration of April 23, 2011."
It is now July and their website is non-existent. The home page just has a list of cupcake flavors, THAT APPARENTLY I CANNOT GET. And a phone number, THAT APPARENTLY I CANNOT GET A HOLD OF. It is probably up to tease the poor Grouponers on their dissatisfaction that there are no cupcakes! I must say their flavors look nommy, but how can I confirm their nomminess, IF THERE ARE NO CUPCAKES? How disappointing! =(
What finally made me decide to request a refund was after reading the Groupon discussion board about Bonafide Cupcakes. And I found out that not only after their "remodeling of their kitchen and their upgrade of their website" Bonafide Cupcakes have been MIA, not answering phones and/or missing deliveries that were confirmed. (HOW DID THOSE PEOPLE GET A HOLD OF ANYONE ANYWAYS?) I understand that the demand was quite overwhelming for the company, but they should of at least put a cap on how many Groupons to give out or figured out a sustainable distribution and/or order system PRIOR to their Groupon release! What happened to making business plans? I'm a fan of them, use them!
When the Groupon closed there were about 2800 Groupons purchased. But when I return to the Bonafide Cupcake Groupon site now, it states 2100. So hey, 700 of us were smart enough to ask for refunds - I think the 2100 so do the same.
NO CUPCAKES = CUPCAKE FAIL!
So I recently bought 2 Groupons for a cupcakery called Bonafide Cupcakes about a month ago. When I saw this, I instantly jumped on it and so did 2800 Grouponers. For those that do not know what the the hell Groupon is, it is a unique marketing concept where a special deal is offered in a city/county/community and there is a minimum number of coupons that needs to be sold in order for the coupon to be activated. I laid eyes on this offer and SAW the word cupcakes, and you had me at "Herrow!" In the Groupon, Bonafide Cupcakes offered their half price cupcake deal, a dozen cupcakes delivered to a radius surrounding the DC Metropolitan area for $20 (if you are good at math...that means it is originally $40 for a delivered dozen..DUR).
So I tried to order a nice dozen to try and I gave about 5 days notice and I get this reply 4 days later:
Thanks for the email!
Currently our scheduled is booked with GROUPON orders for quite some time. We're going over the schedule today and we can let you know what day the schedule opens back up a bit later on.
Let us know if you need anymore info!
Thanks,
BonaFide Cupcakes
Yeah I need more info! Where are MY CUPCAKES? =( And there should be a better way to go about these orders. And there should be stipulations set on the website!! I understand the shear madness the company went through fulfilling the massive influx of Groupon orders. I'm sympathtic. But they need to figure out how to communicate this better. Looks like I'm stuck waiting. But I want my cupcakes! And NOW!!
WAAAAAAAANNNNH! RICKY!!
